Life of Fred

Life of Fred is an unusual math program that encourages students to think. It is a series of books that read like a novel and teach math concepts. At the end of each chapter there are a few problems dealing with the chapter material, but there is not a lot of workbook style problems. Struggling readers will struggle with this program if doing it independently. Concepts build upon each other. Older grades may enjoy starting with basic concepts and reading to grade level .

Moving Beyond the Page

This program is a comprehensive homeschooling program that is focused on activities, hands on adventures and incorporates math, reading, writing, social studies, history, geography, literature, and science into one curriculum. It is engaging to students and does not require a lot of prep from parents, but it is not an independent curriculum, it requires a parent and students to do the program together. It is also very pricey. Athenian does not pay for a full curriculum. Parents will have to pick and choose and piece items together as well as supplementing literature on their own. Many parents like this curriculum as it is a holistic approach to educating rather than compartmentalized subjugation of curriculum. Writing flows into math, math flows into social studies, geography flows into history.
